Types of production

With the types of production, you have to think about this before you start to film or even start to plan your film or show. With the depict task we had to think for a while what sort of production we wanted to do and then we finally came up with the conclusion that everyone was happy on which was the 1950’s based film. But with big industry films and shows they will have to plan on a greater scale as they are going to put a lot more time and money into the project. Different productions like tv shows and films are made by companies like MGM, Sony, universal, warner brothers and may more. It is set out by distribution and broadcasters. With our project it was an independent format, we shared it through the internet via YouTube because we wouldn’t have been able to share in expensive ways because that would have cost money which we do not have. Independent cinemas are funded by the British national institution and they get their money from the left over lottery funds. With the Blaire witch project, 10 clover field lane and Clerks they were small budget films that made a lot of money because they funded them themselves and because they didn’t have people funding them and they could do it all themselves they made a lot of money on the process.

Sources of finance

With the sources of finance, we had to make sure if we needed to fund the film but we didn’t because all of the props that we used we got form the college or ourselves. If we needed to fund the whole thing ourselves, it would have cost quite a lot because we were all wearing suits based uniforms except Eden and jack. The gun props and the card props would have been that expensive but then we used a smoke machine and that would have been. Luckily we didn’t have to spend any money for the production except the cards because I forgot them on the day but they were only £1.20 so it didn’t matter. When the big filming industries are dealing with the sources of finance they have to pay thousands and millions depending on how famous the films are that they make. Big production industries will pay millions to make a film and then in return make a much bigger profit because they make sure that they sort their finances out before the film that they make. It is a big thing to worry about when making a film because if you do not plan it properly then you may have to over budget and end up not making that much profit or maybe not at all.

Requirements

We needed to have the camera equipment to make the short film, we needed all of the people in the group to help so we could get the task done. We also need the props and we used in the film but that was alright as we got them form carl and brought them form home. We needed to get into a specific uniform so we could take part in the film. This was good as well because all of us us in the actual group that played a part had the right uniform to wear. So we didn’t have to spend any money when it came to getting the uniforms.

Time management

We also had to manage our time around the filming process and the pre plan production task. We had to do this because if we didn’t then we wouldn’t have been able to use certain rooms and wouldn’t have been able to get the people to fill in the spots for the film, for example carl had to fill in for the bouncer which we asked to do in advance. It is key that you manage the time when making a film or show because you could run over the time and then have to put more money and time into it which can be stressful and delay it even further. This would be the same for big industry films, if they didn’t manage their time then they wouldn’t be taken seriously and they wouldn’t make it in the world of film and TV.

personnel

With the personnel in the team we head me as Donnie, joe as Clarence, Ruth as the camera women, Helen as the king pin, jack as a henchman and Eden as a henchman but it was mine Helens, joes and Ruth’s task to do the 90 second depict task. For the roles of the team I was the dealer and the main henchman in the film, Helen was the king pin so she was the leader of the whole situation, Ruth as the camera women so she filmed most of the 90 second film, joe as Clarence who was the main character of the film then you had Eden and jack who filled in to be henchman and then carl as the bouncer. Eden and jack didn’t have to say anything for the film as they were only there to make it look more intimidating. Carl was there to make it look like a proper gambling ring as the big strong bloke on the door which gives more of a feel of being a dark and scary area to be in. when you are thinking of this in an industry way they have loads of personnel that they have to deal with and they have them because they have expertise in different areas to help make the films and shows. Helen had the skills of being an actor because she does drama so she helped us when we were filming it by telling us what to do. This was hard for joe as he wasn’t very good at keeping a straight face and it took a few tries for us to film it as he wasn’t very cooperative, but in the end we got it done to a good standard of filming. None of us didn’t really have that much skill and experience to offer as none of us had done it before so it was good to have one person that could tell us what to do. with the resourcing we didn’t have to do much because we had all of the stuff that we needed ourselves, except the gun props which were given to us by carl. We didn’t have to buy anything except for the cards but they were only £1.20. when you are talking about big industries they have people with skills and experience you they then hire to do the specific job they are looking for. With the resourcing they can afford to pay for most things because they make millions from shows and films that they make. With availability we had to make sure that the rooms were available and if we were available; to record the short film. All of us were here except me for one day of the editing and joe for the filming. This wasn’t that bad as we still managed to film the 90 second film to a good standard. When the professional industry deals with the availability, they will plan months ahead so they don’t have any problems with people and they will have backups if anything goes wrong. A lot of them will not have to think too much about costs because they make millions but they will have to make sure that they set the money out accordingly so they don’t over budget and in case they need more to fund the project that they are working on. They also have to make sure that they have a crew so they can actually film the process. The crew/team will make up the whole thing. They have different people doing different jobs, such as the film crew, the catering crew and the other crews which will make up for the whole team of people that have to do their jobs so the filming can take place. You have to think about how many people you are going to need in your crew when filming because you would have to pay everyone and if you had loads of people you may over budget, if was alright for us as we only had 7 people and we don’t have to worry about paying people or anything else because they volunteered to do it. We didn’t have to worry about checking people CV’s when we filmed because it was only for a college project. If this was a professional film then we would want to have people that knew what they were doing so we would need to check their CV’s to check if they can do what they say they can. This would come under time management as well because if you are hiring 100 people it is going to take a long time to go through 100 + people’s CV’s.

facilities

We had to work out before we filmed the project what facilities we were going to use, originally we were going to use the drama studio as it was big and dark and that was the sort of scene we wanted to capture in our film. In the end we used W19 which is a small dark room which worked better because there were filming lights in there which we used to make the room look gloomier and when the smoke machine was on it made it look like a proper gambling ring. We had to make sure that the drama studio was available when we wanted it so we would book it out, it was better using the other room because it was rarely being used making it easier for us as we could film in there whenever we needed to. It didn’t cost anything to book the rooms out you just had to write down in advance that you were going to be using the room so people didn’t take up your slots and preventing us from recording the film. When you are thinking of the professional industries, they will have to book out facilities to use when they are filming in advance because it would usually not be there property and the would have to make sure that they book it as other people may want to at the same time. This may cost them a lot of money so I would be better for them to book ahead to possibly make it cheaper and to raise the funds if they need to. They would also have to check when the facility is open and closed and if they can even use it or not. It will be harder for them as they would have to worry about the cost of it and see if they can even use it, it wasn’t that bad for us because we wouldn’t have to worry about it that much as this was a smaller project.

Gathering materials

When we were gathering the materials for the films, we had to make sure that we had the stuff that we needed otherwise we would have to go out and buy the stuff or film something different. Luckily there were face masks that we used when filming to mask Jack and Eden’s face when filming, this made the film look better because it blocks their face, they were henchman so it made them look scarier because you don’t know what they look like. These props free so we didn’t have to worry about paying for them. When carl played the bouncer he brought his own tuxedo in to wear to make himself look like a proper bouncer. This was good because we didn’t have to supply him with the uniform which could have costed us quite a bit. We had to make sure that carl could give us gun props because none of us had them, I bought some cards on the day of the filming because I forgot mine, everyone that was in the film except from Jack and Eden brought their own uniforms in so it could be filmed as close as we could to the 1950’s style. Helen brought in her own smoke machine so that it looked like there was cigarette smoke in the room, making it look more like a gambling ring. We had to plan ahead what materials we needed to gather. The only thing that cost anything was the deck of cards. We didn’t have to sign any clearances as carl said it was alright for us to film in that room.

contributors

The only contributors that we had when we were filming were Eden and Jack, we needed them because we didn’t have enough people when the card game was happening. It also made the film look better with two other henchmen in the room because it gave it the look what we were going for. If we planned ahead better, we could have given them into uniform but it was a last minute thing because the people that I arranged to fill the spaces were not in on the day.

Locations

When we were filming our film we had to make sure that we had a location for the filming, we chose EN to film our production. We had to get carls permission to film in the room that we did. We didn’t have to fill out any forms that had to allow us to film in the room that we chose. There were not any limitations, there were not many risks when filming in the room just wires that we could have tripped over because of the lights in the room and our bags but we moved them out of the way because we could have had an accident if they were in the way and because there would have been continuity errors if they were in the way. We decided to film in the room because it was dark and gloomy making the scene fit better, also there were lights in the room that we could use to make it look better. We filmed in the drama hallway because not many people go down there so it would have been easier to film there as we wouldn’t have to stop and start that much. That was for the beginning and the end of the film. We filmed the rest of the film in w19.  When the big industry thinks about locations that have to pre plan where they are going to film. They have to make sure if they can book it, this would be another reason for them to book in advance, also they may need to pay. They will have to fill out forms to say they can film there, and they would have to work out all of the risks if there are any.

Codes of practice

For our film we had to make sure that we had the clearances to make the film otherwise we wouldn’t be allowed to film it. We had to make sure it was legal and nothing was wrong with the film so we could record and nothing was. We didn’t have to insure anything to do with the film because were given the equipment that we used and we gathered the props ourselves. With the legal side of the film we had to make sure that we didn’t copy anything and by doing this we made sure that we didn’t use any of the music or anything to do with the film that had be taken from something else that already exists. When we got the music that we used for our film we got it off a website that lets you download the music without copyrighting it. If we did copyright in the film then we could have to pay someone all the fees that we got in the process but luckily we didn’t.  OFCOM is the communications regulator in the UK. they regulate the TV and the radio and the video on demand. The bbc is regulated by the office of fair trading and outside bodies. The trade union is an organized association of workers in a trade they deal with groups of trades or professions and they were formed to protect and further their rights and interests. BACT and BECTU are representatives and have been in talks for more than two years to secure a new collective agreement for film production in the UK. a trade association also known as an industry trade group, business association, sector association or industry body, is an organization founded and funded by businesses that operate in a specific industry. Many of them are no profit based and are organised by government bylaws and directed by officers who are also members.
